Episode 111 - Too Many Choices

Having more choices is supposed to make life easier, but sometimes it does the exact opposite. In this episode of The Books By Josh Audio Immersion, I talk about what happens when almost everything in our lives comes with an overwhelming number of options. Netflix gives us thousands of things to watch, Amazon gives us hundreds of versions of the same product, AI can give us multiple solutions to the same problem, and even our careers, investments, hobbies, and side hustles can send us in dozens of different directions. Eventually, having more options stops feeling like freedom and starts becoming noise.

I use my own life as an example because I run into this constantly. I write across different genres, from light novels and romance to mysteries, police procedurals, darker stories, and poetry, which means sitting down to write isn't always as simple as deciding to write. I still have to decide what deserves my attention. The same thing happens with entertainment, technology, career opportunities, investing, and even the people we choose to spend our time with. Sometimes the best way to figure out what matters isn't to add another option but to imagine what we would choose if most of those options disappeared.

I also get into the pressure to make money in a world where the cost of simply living continues to make one income feel insufficient for a lot of people. That has created an endless menu of side hustles, businesses, investments, and supposed shortcuts to financial freedom. I've tried plenty of them myself, but writing remains the thing that has actually produced consistent results for me because it's something I've spent years doing and genuinely enjoy. That experience has reinforced something I've talked about before: chasing whatever currently looks profitable isn't necessarily the same as building something that works for you.

Ultimately, I don't think we need to optimize every second of our lives or develop a perfect system for making every decision. Sometimes we need to drown out the noise, remember why we're doing something in the first place, make a choice, and move forward. You don't have to explore every possible path just because it's available to you. Pick the one that matters, take another step toward it, and see where it leads.
