MacBook Neo, iPhone 17e, and M5 Macs: My Thoughts on Apple’s Spring Hardware Week

MacBook Neo, iPhone 17e, and M5 Macs: Apple’s Spring Hardware Week

Apple started March with a quiet wave of product announcements. There wasn’t a traditional keynote presentation this time around. Instead, Apple released several devices over the course of a week, updating parts of the lineup that had been sitting unchanged for a while. The result was a mix of predictable updates, a few interesting surprises, and one product that might quietly become one of the most important Macs Apple has released in years.

In the newest episode of Tek With Josh, I walk through everything Apple introduced during that announcement week. The lineup includes the new iPhone 17e, updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the introduction of a budget-friendly MacBook Neo, a refreshed iPad Air, and an updated display lineup that now includes the Studio Display XDR.

Rather than treating these announcements as isolated products, it’s more interesting to look at what they say about where Apple’s product strategy is heading.

The iPhone 17e and Apple’s Entry-Level Strategy

The iPhone 17e continues Apple’s attempt to offer a lower-cost entry point into the iPhone ecosystem. It isn’t meant to compete with the flagship Pro models, and it doesn’t try to. The camera system is simpler, the display lacks ProMotion, and the overall feature set is clearly designed to keep the price down.

For someone who just wants a reliable phone that will receive years of software updates, the 17e fills that role well. It’s especially appealing for parents buying their child’s first phone or for people who simply don’t need the newest flagship features.

M5 Macs and the Quiet Evolution of Apple Silicon

The Mac updates this year are mostly evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The MacBook Air now moves to the M5 chip, and while the design remains the same, the internal upgrades continue Apple’s steady improvement of performance and efficiency.

The MacBook Pro lineup follows the same path, with M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations aimed at creators, developers, and professionals who need more GPU power and stronger performance for workloads like AI models, rendering, and video production.

Why the MacBook Neo Might Be Apple’s Most Interesting Laptop This Year

While the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro updates were expected, the MacBook Neo was not. At around $599, it becomes the lowest-cost Mac laptop Apple has offered in years. That price point immediately puts it into a category that usually belongs to Chromebooks and entry-level Windows machines.

The Neo makes some compromises to reach that price, including simpler ports and a more basic design. But it still runs macOS and Apple Silicon. Even a budget Mac will likely receive years of updates and remain usable far longer than many laptops in the same price range. For students or everyday users who just need a reliable machine for school, writing, or browsing, the Neo could become an extremely popular option.

Apple’s Display Lineup Gets an Update

Apple also refreshed its display lineup, including both the Studio Display and the new Studio Display XDR. The standard Studio Display remains Apple’s mainstream external monitor for Mac users, while the Studio Display XDR introduces Mini‑LED technology, higher brightness, and improved contrast aimed at creative professionals who need color accuracy for video or photography work.

The Announcements That Didn’t Happen

Interestingly, the most noticeable part of Apple’s announcement week might be the products that didn’t appear. Many people expected to see a new Apple TV and an updated Mac mini with the M5 chip. Neither showed up. The Mac mini in particular remains one of Apple’s most compelling desktops because of its balance of price and performance, so an eventual M5 update could make it even more attractive.
