Episode 46 - Touch Screen Mac?

Apple's latest announcements are finally here, including the long-awaited touchscreen MacBook Pro. But with higher prices and familiar hardware, are these upgrades really worth the money?

In Episode 46 of Tek With Josh, I start with the problems surrounding Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo. Reports of damaged displays have raised questions about durability and quality control, but how much of this comes down to first-generation hardware versus people simply not understanding how to handle a foldable phone? Drawing from my experience with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series, I discuss why foldables require different expectations from traditional smartphones.

Apple also introduced a refreshed iPad mini with an OLED display and A20 processor, along with an updated M6 iMac. Both bring welcome improvements, but the iPad mini is still limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, while the iMac continues with the same design and limited port selection on its base configuration. Are these meaningful upgrades or just another round of specification bumps?

Then there's the new 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro. Despite carrying the Pro name, it uses Apple's standard M6 processor rather than a Pro or Max chip. I break down its pricing, specifications, and how it compares to the existing M5 Pro models, including whether the newer processor actually makes it a better purchase.

The biggest announcement, however, is Apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro, featuring a tandem OLED display, Dynamic Island, the return of the glowing Apple logo, and a starting price that's $400 higher than the traditional models. While the display improvements are interesting, the machines still use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. I discuss why I'm not convinced touchscreens belong on laptops, what Apple could have done differently, and whether these changes justify paying hundreds more.

Touchscreens, OLED displays, higher prices, and familiar processors—but are we actually getting better computers or just more expensive versions of what we already have?

That's what we're discussing in Episode 46 of Tek With Josh.
