Today's post is inspired from a random thought that I had while taking out the trash. When I checked my phone for the weather before leaving work I noticed it was going to snow tomorrow here in New York City. So it got me thinking about putting salt down before the snow falls. I know that this wouldn't work in the real world because the snow would melt and it would make ice, but hear me out. This will be a mind changing post, just like my other posts.
If you know that there is going to be a snow storm why get ready for it. Is the basic translation for this quote but that's only the face value of it. The real meaning of this quote is for us to stay prepared for the future has in store for us. Sounds like common sense and impossible but save your comments for the end of the post. One of the easiest and most overlooked form of "salt" is a rainy day fund. Ever since I finished The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey, I have been an advocate for everyone to have a minimum of a thousand dollars in their savings account that they don't touch. Most of people my age are living paycheck to paycheck. There's nothing wrong with that but once Murphy comes knocking you're going to feel it. When I say Murphy, I'm talking about Murphy's Law " Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". So in order to weather through the storm you will need your "salt" which is an emergency fund. This isn't another post about money management, just take a listen to The Dave Ramsey Show. That's just one form of "salt".
Another form of "salt" we need to put down before it snows is value. What do I mean when I say value, I am referring to the child of your self value and perceived value. To keep my terminology simple I'm going to call this child "Total Value". Let's be honest, we are all expendable in the work place. As an employee we can get laid off and the business will still be functional. So how does your Total Value salt the snow of unemployment? If your perceived value is higher than your peers then you are less likely to get cut when the economy turns south. By doing a little more than is expected you will look like a model employee. This will make your value in your employer's eye increase. This doesn't only apply to employees but business owners also. Steve Jobs was kicked out of the company he created but all of us business owners don't have a board of directors to answer to, true. But if a business' perceived value is low then customer won't do as much business as your competitors. Well Josh, all you have been talking about is perceived value and not self value. Your self value places the biggest part because depending on how you value yourself will determine how hard you're willing to work on your perceived value. You must take the initiative to better yourself.
The final form of "salt" that I want to discuss is knowledge. This in my opinion is the most important "salt" you can lay before the snow comes. Knowledge is crucial for anything in life, business, family and health. If you are expecting your first kid then you must research what to expect. You can't expect to change fields at work when you don't do any research in the new field. Knowledge can help in many situation especially in business. Learn from other's mistakes rather than making them yourself and whats the best way to learn from other's mistakes? Books, YouTube and social media are great ways to learn from successful business people. You can learn from even dead people by reading their books, think and grow rich is still a best seller today.
That's all I wanted to say about the salt in this post, but expect a follow up especially on "True Value". If you enjoyed this post thanks, if not oh well.
