February 24th 2020 My Letter To College

Joshes and Joshettes, below is a copy of the exact letter I gave along with my college re-admission.

My name is Joshua A. Rodriguez, and I was a student here at Kingsborough Community College back in the 2008 fall semester. I want to be completely honest here, I wasn't the best student and my subpar GPA reflects this. At the time I was nineteen years old and very impressionable. I wanted to be one of those cool kids, so I began cutting class. At the time I thought nothing of it and I didn’t see the need for a college education. My mother had just lost her job of twenty years and I was working full time and going to school full time. Since I was cutting class and paying out of pocket, I decided to drop out. At age nineteen I thought I had life figured out, I was making decent money and enjoying life but that didn’t last long.

That was a brief summary of who I was over ten years ago and I have changed my views on life as a whole. Since 2008, I was able to advance my position from a wireless sales representative to a store manager. Unfortunately, I had to resign from my position in 2017 because my father became disabled. I spent the next couple of months helping him adjust and then I began looking for a new career. Even though I had the experience, I was turned away from many positions because I lacked a college degree. Eventually, I found a job that was closer to home as an assistant manager at a furniture company. After six months at this new company, I sustained an injury while on a delivery. The injury was very severe and required surgery and an extensive amount of therapy. As of writing this letter, two years since the injury, I still have not recovered fully. Because I was unable to fulfill my job responsibilities and duties, I was forced to seek new employment. Once again, I was turned down for positions because I had no college degree. Fortunately, I was able to find employment at my current company that allows me to work from a desk with a reasonable schedule and pay.

Even though I now work at a job that I love, I still want to earn my college degree. There is no such thing as a secure job anymore and a college degree is necessary for many career choices. My current company does offer tuition reimbursement but this benefit did not influence my decision. As the oldest of three, I want to set a good example for my younger siblings. The middle sibling was able to earn a bachelor's degree from John Jay, whereas my youngest sibling is enrolled in Trinity University’s Pre-Med program. When I was originally enrolled, my major was computer science but I want to switch it to either business administration or business management. I currently own and run my own LLC and a degree in said fields would allow me to take my business and job to the next level. The main reason I wanted to get my degree is that I saw Kingsborough offers KCC Flex which will allow me to complete my degree online. I would rather get a degree with an accredited school rather than some random online school. I do not want to feel overwhelmed and bite off more than I can chew, so for now, I want to take only one course at this time. I know earning a degree by taking one course per semester will take longer, yet I am willing to do so to ensure I can keep an above average GPA.
